I dont know a whole lot about Volvo's either ,but looking around at them, I figure an engine swap from a turbo s70 or v70 would be your best bet. They are 2.4L turbo motors. Keep in mind that the wiring and such will likely be a challenge.

I would imagine the motor being a few thousand in good shape. The rest would depend on if you swap it yourself or not, and what parts you upgrade at the time (intercooler, etc.)
Also, maybe the turbo manifold off of the turbo model will bolt up to your head? What is the compression ratio on your motor?
