Default Side Mount Intercooler

How much boost can a side mount intercooler efficiently handle? I'm guessing between 7-8lbs. I know its a lame question and side mounts suck, but I'd like to know anyway.

Thanks,

Thanks Mark. I got it for the cheap so I figure I will give it a shot. My set up will be very basic. I also wont have a ton of $$ invested in the piping because I'm not mounting it under the fender. Placement will be next to my smaller (but thicker than stock) aluminum radiator. So the run out of the super charger will be a near straight shot. Plus I will have room to install a larger intercooler if the standard side mount proves to blow chunks. Should be something along the lines of this.

Use a mid mount intercooler if you want to be stealthy. With a smic in florida, you're asking for heat soak.

Sounds like a really cool project! Considered air-water at all?

Also, it depends on the sidemount thickness and what compressor. 7-8psi on a turbo in it's efficiency range produces less heat than that supercharger. Consider that S14-S15 have a bigger side mount and run 7-8psi stock. PSI is not a good measurement.

Lots of the guys that supercharge their KA us meth/water injection which eventually kills to coating of the supercharger. For that reason I want to stay away it. For starters I want to get a basic air-air set up (like the above picture together) and then "play" with the different combinations of intercooling. I just thought the side mount could be a good starting point

I want to try something different. The picture is a set up from an aftermarket company that builds for Lotus. Air-water would be by far the best choice Epstein but its very costly. What would be a better measurement, if PSI isnt it? I know my limitations on this subject and would difer to anyone that could help me make a good choice. What the size difference between as s14/15 and that of an s13?

I've never boosted a car before but see all the time on here where someones ill tuned KA-T has popped. My reason for wanting to do the SC is because of the linear boost, max of around 10psi (unless you mess with the pulley size), and since the KA doesnt rev like a SR but still has ample torque the SC would work nicely. A solid tune and intercooling should make plenty of power for a daily.

That and I have two superchargers, one from an Xterra, which is commonly used, and one from a 3800 GM.

The photo below gives you an idea of the mounting position I'm considering. Please note the area is roughtly 1/3 the width of the standard KA radiator and equally as tall. The piping to the intercooler will be super short due to the SC connecting essentially where the existing lower intake plenium is now.

Thanks for looking and your input guys!!

Disclaimer: I'm not a supercharger expert! I would use the bigger supercharger as it shouldn't have to work as hard to build the same pressure. That should help a bit with heat. For intercooler sizing, I would use core volume. That is, depth x length x width, excluding the end tanks. The size space that you have sounds like it will work well. The Xterra and GTP applications that you listed don't even have intercoolers.

I don't like meth/water simply because that stuff runs out and you need a good safety net. The AEM flow meter/gauge system is nice. I would rather commit to E85, which has it's own cooling effect, higher octane, and higher knock limit. That only costs bigger injectors, which you're probably already buying.

Tuning these things isn't hard. I just wouldn't plan on stock ECU with an SAFC like every other doomed setup. ROM tune would be perfect here.

if you have the ability to run a i/c why not run a fmic core n hit it w some black paint. sounds smarter then toying with a bull shit smic core that'll be wasting your time when you wanna swap a larger pulley on the s/c down the road

my lag is your courtesy head start

ATTENTION.... installing a head gasket, head studs or pistons and rods in your otherwise STOCK engine dose not make it a "built" engine! stop listing you cars for sale saying they are built when its not!!

My reasoning for the side mount is the ability to mount it in that location, enabling a short piping run for the intercooler itself. The side mount was inexpensive so I thought I'd give it a shot. Demensionally I know its very small. Which is why I asked just what sort of boost it would support/cool. A better question may have been how efficiently it would cool the volume of a air a super charger could push. Apparently its not much as your comments have indicated.

My goal is to keep the run to and from the intercooler as short as possible to avoid as much lag as possible lag. More than likely I will end up with some sort of V-mount or mid-mount when all is said and done.

Do it right the first time. Save yourself some aggravation.
