Where has the USD gone?
Fell free to debate this. I'm not mentioning politics, so skip this if you're currently holding a torch/pitchfork or are sitting in a bunker.
I think the collossal collapse of the S-chassis scene has several motivations. This was the hot car to build for years, fueled by drifting. With the popularity brought the guys with real money. I saw this when I rode the WRX wave through the first few years. Deep pocket guys buy a lot of parts, blow stuff up, buy more, crash, get bored and sell; hemoraging cheap used parts the whole time. It's trickle-down from there. The whole time, the average joe and the broke students are getting drawn in to the popularity and buying stuff. Well, we're not cool anymore. Formula D used to be 90% 240's. Now it's a really diverse group with less than half 240's. People got into drifting with 240's, then went on to drift something cooler or quit drifting for Time Attack. Popularity folded up quick, leaving tons of parts with everyone getting out of the scene. Then the economy hit. Anyone with any brains and cash reprioritized and kept that money in the bank. This also accelerated the part-outs/sales from this expensive hobby. So now you have a landscape with enough parts hanging around to support the most popular platform, but half as many people or less.
So all the guys with lots of money have gotten bored and moved on. All the guys with some money have reprioritized cars out of their life. All the guys with little money just lost their jobs at Publix and now have no money. And, all the people with no money talk shit in the FS section all day about drift tax and how things are overpriced even though used parts values are at their lowest ever.
Don't get me started about the horrible Yen exchange rate. Buying awesome parts from Japan has never been more expensive.

I cant say much about 240 prices, I have a decent job but dont try and spend alot on my car. And I got a 240 just because they are fairly cheap to put together, unlike rx7s that cause a rich man to become poor.
4 fc's 6 motors, Im done with rotaries

damn dude... bad luck much?
we used to buy parts for my buddies fc for cheaper than I would buy the same/similar parts for my 240... now mind you, the parts were harder to find and you have to be ready to buy them right then and there when you found them, but the prices were still good. 240s are cheap and a parts are a bit more easy to come by.
I'll agree, the cost of the used parts themselves are cheaper than ever.
The drift tax really comes into play when people are trying to sell entire cars. Used aftermarket/performance parts are pretty border line on that too. Its like the people selling the parts are only selling them because they are broke themselves so they are trying to get a stack of cash for them. It isn't anywhere near as common to find used performance parts getting sold by people who just upgraded to bigger and better.
