Car down, Need MAJOR Help....
This is on a S14 SR in a 95 240
I will start from the very top.
We were going to put in AUTOMETER GAUGES in the car. WATER TEMP AND OIL PRESSURE. We ran the wires after we installed the nissport temp adaptor in the upper radiator hose. We ran a ground from the temp adapter to the ground by the driver side strut tower. This is where my alarm is grounded also. This is also the place where my Z maf is grounded too. We ran wires from ignition by the electric fan and also tried putting it straight in positive battery terminal (my battery is located in the trunk). We grounded the gauges at the fuse panel ground in the driver's area. Only two grounds were taken off and than put back in. No other wiring was touched in any way. The fuse box ground by the driver side kickpanel did have a extra ground ring attached to it but there was no wire that went with it at all. We searched diligently through it all but didn't see any extra wire hanging anywhere near the fuse box panel or surrounding area. The gauge didn't work as it doesn't rise, we had the car running for few minutes so that it will work but it didn't. We couldn't put the oil pressure sender in by the engine as we were not able to find a way to get the old plug and stuff out. But we did do an oil change and removed the filter to see if we can take out the old plug for oil pressure, but no luck. Now after that when we started the car, car is not sounding normal. Idle seems to be a little off and none of the gauges have any power in the gauge cluster or the headunit or avcr or safc. But once you give a little GAS and pass about 2000-3000 rpm, everything comes back on and its fine. We shut off the car and try again. Same thing, no changes, the cluster doesn't keep power for the clock or anything, it just goes totally out. You start the car, hit the gas, it comes back on all the way. We saw wiring and ground that we took off, everything was ok. We took a short drive and the car died. I start the car, but it would't start, all kinds of harness and stuff is clicking but there is no juice. We jump start my car and head back home, after ¼ of the way home, it dies again. We had to get it jumped like 4 times to get it home (about 2 miles away from home). I started the car after a little while at home and with a multimeter checked the DC Voltage on the battery terminals. I initially got 11.7 and it kept going down every second by .1 volts until it reached 10.0 volts. I then, shut off the car.
I suspect that the alternator is not charging the battery. I checked all connections to the alternator itself. They all seem ok. Three physical connections on the Alternator. One big RED PLUG, one ground wire and one more plug that has two little wires. They looked just fine. I have an extra plug that's hanging around in that area and is not plugged into anything. I didn't see any more plugs on the alternator where it might plug into. I will jack up the car and look closely. The plug looks pretty old and is pretty clogged with oil and dirt so I am not sure if its just extra of does it plug in somewhere. We did do the oil and filter change, that may have clogged it too. I am not sure. In the FSM it just says to disconnect the harness connector in the remove instructions for the alternator. It does't tell us how many connections are on the alternator and so forth.
We did not remove any wiring connections other than those two grounds mentioned above. And put them back in the original place nicely.
FSM gives the make and model for the alternator which is MITSUBISHI A2T82191 with nominal rating 12V-90Amp.
I read the sticker off the one I have in my car, it says this NISSAN C23100 65F1. Than it also reads A2T80591A and it reads 12 80A 74181 and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.
Now the A2T #'s don't match up. One is 12V-90A, other is 12v-80A. Any interchangeable ALTERNATOR for the S14 SR?
What could be causing this:
1) BAD ALTERNATOR
2) BAD CONNECTION OR DIS CONNECTION ON THE ALTERNATOR (Extra plug hanging in the are fill of oil and dirt, not connected to anything)
3) GROUND PROBLEMS (THE TWO GROUNDS WE TOOK OFF or one ground in fuse box area where we can't find a wire that goes to it)
4) BAD BATTERY
Please help.
I checked the fuses, they are all fine. The 30A and the 7.5A for the alternator is just fine in the engine compartment. I will double check them again tonight.
TIA
