s14 or s13 motor
Should i spend the extra money and get the s14 or stay with a black top s13 motor s14=250-260hp at 15psi and s13 230-250 at 15psi. I will be racing this car as well as showing it i want a fast daily driver. both with have a t3/t4 turbo and i want it to be close to 400hp as i can and be able to pull 12's
SPECS ON BOTH
S13 Black Top SR20DET complete $2850 plus shipping.
Displacement: 1998cc (2.0 liter)
Cam type: DOHC 16 valve, chain driven cam sprockets
Bore and stroke: 86mm x 86mm
Compression: 8.5 : 1
Horsepower: 205hp at 6000rpm Torque: 203 ft/lbs at 4000rpm
Stock boost: 7 psi
Throttle body bore: 60mm
Turbo specs: Injector size: 370cc/min
Compressor: T-25, 60 trim 56mm BCI-1 compressor.
Turbine: T-25, 62 trim 53.8mm 0.64 A/R turbine housing.
Center Section: Journal bearings
Aluminum alloy block and head with steel alloy sleeves. Distributorless, crank angle sensor activated ignition, direct fire coil packs. Stock SR's come with an internal wastegate, a knock sensor, a side mounted intercooler and a bypass valve that is routed back into the intake after the MAF before the turbo. Stock turbo outlet is 1 7/8 inches, inlet and throttle body are ~2 1/2 inches.
Performance: The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The engine should produce 230-250 RWHP at safe boost.
S14 Black Top SR20DET complete $3600 plus shipping
Horsepower: 220hp at 6000rpm Torque: 203 ft/lbs at 4800rpm
Turbo specs:
Compressor: T-28, 60 trim 60 mm BCI-1 compressor in T-04B housing
Turbine: T-25, 62 trim 53.8mm 0.64 A/R turbine housing.
Center Section: Ball Bearing
Variable valve timing system and a different turbo are the significant changes from the S13 SR20DET engines. S14 uses 'low port' intake design vs. S13 'high port' design.
Performance:
The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The engine should produce 250-260 RWHP at safe boost

with a T3/T4 and no engine management. you could get numbers close to enthalpy's setup at that point of juts over 380whp.. i'd set my goal to 365-370whp tho.... cause the closer u get to 400whp the harder it is to keep it a daily driver..

I dont feel like a sig today.
As a s14 sr owner....
i figure i give you my point of view.....
if you're looking for cheap 12's, go with the s13. Engine is cheap, aftermarket parts are in abundance......
s14 sr will be expensive to start out with, mods will make it even higher.......and specially reaching same goals....
one thing is, s14 sr is newer to mostly all s13 engines out there......redtop/blacktop......yes you can get a low mileage s13 one and even a newer blacktop........blah blah
look at it this way, the older the engine, the longer it sat on some crate, the more possibility it may require TLC and extra parts to run right....but than again, someone can argue that S14, you're trusting someone with an engine that you don't know about or don't know the history off and so on.....
basically you are taking a chance either way when getting an SR, but between s13 and s14, probability of engine being in good working condition would obviously be a engine that didn't sit on a crate somewhere outside some shop.....or warehouse...for a longer period of time.......s14 is the winner.....
conclusion, i would do s13 in s14 body, if i was to do it all over again, but this doesn't mean that i am not happy wiht my s14 sr......i am very very happy......
hopefully i gave you somehting you can use to decide which one is good for you
