350z exhaust note
How much do you think, that particular exhaust note is created by the exhaust and/or muffler on a 350z?
I know you couldn't get it exact just by swapping a muffler, but do you think you'd pick up some of that tone using a 350z exhaust on another car?

headers would be kind of tough to recreate, but you can get the y pipe on craigslist for pretty cheap.
I was just batting the idea around with updating the 300zx exhaust with the 350z exhaust. I don't know that I wanted to drop the coin to do a full exhaust set up, but the piping on our car is all rusted, and holey and beat up and since stock 350z exhaust is cheaper than some of the 300zx options, i thought that might be a fun way to go, especially if it gains some of that 350 exhaust tone.

Never heard a VQ car (in person at least) sound anything close to good. Even with name brand exhausts. Just personal opinion though.

I would think that it would also be determined on the travel length. The 300 chassis is noticeably longer than the 350. Think of it kind of like a pipe organ. You can have one note and 2 different length pipes on that one note. Each pipe will have a different variation because of the length. I understood that you are not trying to exactly mimic the 350 sound, but it might be difficult to come relatively close.

Stock exhaust sounds good enough to me to not want to change it and the nismo s tune is awesome too.

also
the 300zx wheel base = 2,450 mm (96.5 in)
the 350z wheel base = 2,649 mm (104.3 in)
300zx overall length = 4,305 mm (169.5 in)
350z overall length = 4,303 mm (169.4 in)
So they are actually really really really close in length.
The hard part would be that the 350 exhaust is bent to math the longer wheel base, but that would just be a matter of some piping and mandrel bends.
Which as I can tell, don't have much of any impact on the actual sound of the exhaust as the mandrel bent aftermarket stuff still has the same "hum"
I'm starting to think that there is a whole lot more to it than just the piping because that distinctive note is still there when you bolt up aftermarket exhaust and some of them even do a true dual exhaust with two separate mufflers indicating that the hum doesn't come from the mufflers, or the Y pipe.
Not sure about the headers, but I'm thinking the only way to get that exhaust tone is to swap the engines.
Actually, there is one: the raw brokerage NA z33 drift car. No idea what's done to it but its one of the craziest sounding cars I've ever heard.
