DS support bearing
DS support bearing
Is the support bearing on the 5spd Driveshaft serviceable? Lord Google has given no definitive answer, mostly people with $$$ insisting the OP get a one-piece instead of being useful by answering the question. I have a litre of cola for whoever can help.
From what I found, it would be cheaper to buy another driveshaft than to get it fixed. It looks to be press fit. I got one for $40 at a u pull it with a good bushing and bearing, even with 160k on the odometer.
It is my understanding that it isn't serviceable.
Anytime that has ever been bad, I ended up buying a used drive shaft from someone, or hoping it didn't destroy anything while I saved up for a one piece.

call local driveshaft shop find out how much it cost to retube the driveshaft using exsisting u joints at the trans and at the diff it cost me 150 for it so a viable option. and its serviceable but not really worth it when the bearing is $40 and the headache of trying to change it.

I seem to recall being able to pick up a steel one for less than 200 bucks.
might have been used. but still.
well thats just it the retubing makes it a one piece so i paid 150 for a one piece made to my length.

It doesn't really matter much if it's steel or aluminum. All there is is a weight factor, something that you will never notice the difference w/. I have a steel one piece and trust me, it's a lot lighter than the OEM 2 piece by far

IF it is the only piece that has been lightened, then you should notice a little bit of a difference.
But, if you have several lightweight upgrades, you should notice a difference of just a couple of pounds here and there.
i forget exactly how it works out, but it is something stupid like 1 pound of rotating mass is like dropping 8 pounds elsewhere in the car.
With a 240, you only need to drop something like 12-13 pounds to have the same effect as increasing 1 horsepower.
