hey guys just found out yesterday that i have a blown head gasket.. Just wanted to figure out if its a lost cause for me to try to get it repaire cause i went to a shop and they said id cost in the 1500 range. im not to savy with something this big of a project to do on my own. so is should i just sell the car or are there any good shops u know that can do it for cheep. any info will help so please share your knowledge 240 llvers..

Head gasket is really easy to do. Only thing you need to worry about is making sure your cam timing is correct when you put it back.

Do not pay a shop to do this. There are plenty of helpful people on here that wouldn't mind helping I'm sure.

I would, but I'm having car wiring issues myself.

Make sure you set pistons at top dead center somewhere.

- Remove Intake and Exhaust Mani
- Remove Valve Cover
- Remove Upper Timing Cover
- Remove Cam Sprockets
- Remove Front timing assembly, just lay it back over the front. Don't let it fall down. Ziptie it if you can.
- Remove Cam Caps
- Remove Cams
- Take out the headstuds
- Remove head, wallah.

Repeat backwards with torque specs

Some people use sealant or cement spray on their head gasket to create a better seal.

This is basically the steps. But yea, just ask around. It's a great learning process and definitely worth the cost than paying a shop.

 

Did water mix with oil? if not somone on here would prolly fix this for a fraction of the "shop" cost.

If water did mix w/oil you could flush it with fresh oil+filter and have somone do the gasket but there'd be no guarantee that there wont still be water/moisture that could cause probs.

Or you can just buy a motorset off here s14 or s13 and put it in or have somone do it for cheap, motorsets are what $250-$500(This is what I would do if water mixed w/oil)

I wouldnt sell a car over a blown headgasket, not one of these at least.

 

Where do you live skim ?

 

Zep Heavy duty oven cleaner, brass wire brushes, m10 allen socket, torque wrench, 12, 14, 10mm sockets, wrenches, extension, swivel, needle nose pliers are all you need.

The FSM's for all year 240sx's are stickied at the top of this forum. Take your time, clean everything properly.

You'll need new head bolts or arp studs, a new head gasket, and a tube of rtv.

If I lived anywhere near you I'd help, but lakeland is quite a ways away. I jst finished my sisters Neon, has a 41te...was under $250 to fix the head gasket, water pump & a few other things...even got the head machined for free , helps to know people. && it took me almost 2 weeks, but im a lil slow like that

 

also ash larry that could be the problem cause my car was sotting not rumnig for a while so moisture could be it as well.

Just make sure your timed at TDC marked on the crank pulley on the compression stroke. You can check the compression stroke by looking at the distributor and making sure it's pointed at piston 1 on the distributor cap. If it's pointed at 4. Your not on the compression stroke.

And just make sure your flush / drain out the fluids before hand.

Make sure its TDC on the compression stroke.Also, if the car overheated better make sure the head isn't warped.
