Default alternator inquires

300zx alternators put out what, 75 amps? when they are healthy.
Probably far less than that when they are covered in greasey gunk.

and even less when they have 75K plus miles on them.

Unless there is some z32 magic trick that I don't know about, replacing the alternator on these things is a major pain in the dick.
I had to replace the alternator when I first got the car. we knew it was bad. So I grabbed the one off of my project car and swapped them out.

I'm thinking that one is beginning to die now as well as I can't the voltage to go over 12.4 unless I have the battery on the charger.

With the 240s, you can swap in the Quest alternator and have 110 amps. It doesn't look like that will work on a Z. Not been able to get them side by side to try and compare, but my search hasn't resulted in anything. Its a common thing to do in the z31s. But the closest I've found to swapping out to a better alternator for a Z32 was using the turbo alternator as it puts out a whopping 5 more amps. Woot!
Anyone know of a clever way to make the quest one work?
Know of any other options to look into?

I was doing some research on rebuilding alternators and it doesn't appear that you can rebuild this style. Is that true? I'm assuming that if you could rebuild it, then you could beef it up for a higher output, like they used to do with the older domestic cars.
I just don't want to go through all of the work of swapping it out just to end up wanting more power in a couple of months.

If you are determined enough you could have a bracket machined and pulley, install LS1/2/6 alternator

Voila 140-155 Amps of take THAT electrical devices

BOOM! more than enough power than I would eva eva eva need. lol.

hhhmmmm..... *cogs starting to turn* wonder just how difficult and expensive that would be...
good suggestion on where to get one for cheap?
If the total cost is going to be the same, or or about the same as buying a new Z alternator, then it might just be worth the paint to make happen.

I found this.... Infiniti J30 & 300ZX HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR

wonder how they did it? looking at their site, they have like 4 or 5 different ones for the 300zx. All with different prices, but the same outputs, give or take 10 amps. Makes me wonder if they know what they are doing...

oh, and just for reference, a new, stock alternator from Advance is $141 - Advance Auto Parts: Alternator by Worldwide - Part 14994

and the "race" one they sell is a crazy 95amps (totally OMG... lol) and that costs $465 - Advance Auto Parts: Denso Race Alternator 95 Amp without Pulley - Black by Powermaster - Part PM8132

so as far as alternator options goes, looking to keep the budget right around the 175 mark. I don't mind spending a little more, if the end result is worth it. But I'm not gonna spend 3 times as much for 10 more amps.

just modify a quest alt to work...

did that on the GTR, just had to extend the bracket a bit and drill out the main bolt hole a bit...

doesn't the quest one have the bracket arm off at an angle?

need them to be straight to bolt up... Might be able to make a custom bracket to fit the quest.

Never held one in my hands long enough to get the dimensions, nor been able to compare side by side so figure out what it was going to take.

take it to any alternator and starter repair service or find a guy that rebuilds them. they can"upgrade" any alternator to what ever amperage output they want.
