KA's come a little on the rich side from the factory

removing the EGR valve causes them to run a little bit more rich because they were tuned for that extra little bit of air that isn't there anymore...

Again, How do you know it is running rich?

Are you dumping black smoke out the tail pipe?
Is there a little bit of black smoke?
Does it poof a little smoke after you've idle for a minute?
Do you have a wideband O2 sensor hooked up that is telling you are rich?

Did this happen all of the sudden? as in, you have been driving the car for a while and then all of the sudden "It got rich" or did you just get this car and you're trying to make it run better?

Do you have aftermarket exhaust?
That will let it smoke a little out the tail pipe too if you don't have a cat any more...

you sure it was a 97?

you know that is an OBD2 engine right? so if it came with the stock harness and the stock ECU, then it is pissed off because you are missing an O2 sensor.

technically, you could have installed an OBD1 harness onto that OBD2 engine and used a obd1 ecu.

So you have an S14 MAF? an S14 ecu?

vacuum leak

probably the manifold gasket itself.

that's why it runs better when you take the MAF off... with the maf off, it is just dumping a preset amount of fuel based off of the TPS. So it doesn't care if there is a vacuum leak or not.
