Exclamation ok so we're stumped

orginally we thought my turbo was bad cuz the car smoked at boost now we've checked the turbo and it has no shaft play but a new problem has come about the car now has a rattle or slight knock sound coming from the head the oil is fine and we pulled the valve cover and checked everything topside pulled the plugs and check those they were also fine. does anyone have an idea as too what i should check for or has this been an issue for anyone before? motor is a stock sr20 with front mount on stock psi any feed back would be greatly appreciated thanks

Dennis

the rattle might be the upper timing chain guide, i know that's a common problem with KA's... if not, with the oil issue you speak of, it may be your valves, and their guides...

had a lifter stick on one of my sr's b4, sounds like the same as you have described. i used 1 quart of lucas oil stabilizer and it worked for me. i ran it for for a couple of days and then did a reg. synth. oil change. i would not advise leaving the lucas in there for 3000 miles tho. food for thought b4 you pull the head

Here's an idea. Let someone look at it who knows what they're talking about.

Well if it was my engine and i heard a knocking noise i would kill each cylinder one by one to determine if it coming from a specific cylinder like mabye a rod knock. What RPM does the noise become present? I see you say the noise gets louder but not faster. Now that i would have to hear. The smoking issue could be due to excessive blowby and/or piss poor crankcase ventilation. Has a compression check and leak down check been done yet?
