i should have searched snopes.com OR how to ruin a perfectly good SR starter
whatever faggot said that the starters have interchangable internals, or that you can just " switch the housing"
$130.00 later it cannot be done with the SR and KA starters that I used.
so this is the dead starter in my car.

i had FOUR good working SR starters, so i figured i'd "swap the housings"
remove

for the morons, remember to remove this also

the black part literally comes out.

zomg planetary gear reduction drive
OH LOOK THE SR ONE COMES APART DIFFERENTLY

similar but different.

the main deal

OK SO THE FOLLOWING THINGS ARE DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE TWO STARTERS:
*.*
there you have it.
no seriously. you can't switch the motors between the two because the spline is a different count and diamter.
you can't switch the brushes between the two because they are different widths.
even the main drive shaft isn't interchangeable because of how the starters engage.
i seriously do not see how it's physically possible to swap the internals on the starters. from here on out, dont' waste your time. just see

You have to use hitachi starters. Looks like you've got a mitsu and a hitachi, thus your problem.
I swapped the heads on my starter 6 or 7 months ago using a reman'd ka starter from autozone.

Well unless you got a freak sr starter that has the security shit on it all the sr starters are made by hitachi and since they're all oem they'll have the sticker on them to id them as such.
When you order a new ka starter ask for hitachi. Unless you get the cheapest reman (worldclass does them for all the chain parts stores) then it's luck of the draw if you get hitachi or mitsubishi.
Considering a new sr starter is $600 and a reman'd ka starter is $139 I think it's worth the waste of time to undo two bolts on a ka starter to find out. Or just pay a little more for the hitachi straight up. Or just keep throwing used starters at your car, if replacing them every six months is your thing.
