Okay guys i just picked myself up a project datsun 280z. My question is the car has been sitting for some time I'm not sure really how long it has been sitting tho but what are some things i should do before i try to get it up and running.I plan on draining the tank and getting fresh gas but should i try and pull the injectors or anything else to try and clean them out.The person i got the car from told me he thinks its the pump and the car will start but stalls very quickly.Thanks in advance. Sorry if i spelled anything wrong im very sleepy.

 

get a haynes or FSM if you can find one. Invaluable. as far as that, i'm sure if you check out some of the 280 boards, they will have good troubleshooting ideas. Is it a "Z" or "ZX"? Z is carbuerated, ZX is fuel injected. Big difference in troubleshooting. If it is a "ZX" you can try direct wiring the fuel pump to the battery to see if it fires up and runs properly (could be the ecu) and you can also try checking the timing. More information would be needed, like did it run before hand, did it stop one day, did it no run after sitting for a while?

 

Sorry i have both hanes and chitlon manuals. The previous owner didnt really know i dont think.It is a 83 zx and it sounds like the fuel pump kicks on but i dont wanna turn it over till i get some good gas and ive looked at a few forums to see some simlar problems but i havent really tried anything yet. Just kinda wondering if i should do anything before i try and turn it over.

 

oil change, plug, wires etc are a very good idea.

 

Not that it matters any more in this thread, but a 280Z is fuel injected.

 

well thank god i think the previous owner used some sort of fuel stabilizer and it worked great cleaned everything and made sure all the fluids were toped off and the car fired right up smoked a little but leveled out.Its not perfect yet but atleast it runs.

 

Really? I thought the ZX stood for fuel injected, and a z was carbeurated. Lesson learned, is that true for all the z cars, or just the 280 in specific? I figured that the FI wasn't put on the 280 till about 80/81. Thanks for the info Eps

 

the 280z was the first in the s30 line to come with EFI. i assume the Z"X" was just to denote a major design change in the body styling, since the engine and trans were the pretty much the same from the 280z (then they turboed it.).

 

Ah, okay, I remember reading on a z site that the zx denoted EFI. Thanks for the info. so all 280z's are EFI?

 

unless they converted to carbs lol or swapped in earlier s30 engine.
