I've ran into a bit of a problem. My KA's ignition switch went out So i've had to roll start it to make it to work the last few times. But somethings going horribly wrong. the car is making a HORRIBLE belt-ish/whirring noise durring exceleration and the tail is smoking...but smells more like its just running RICH as hell....also the sterring colom or powersteering box started RATTLing RELLY baddly. Is there something in the Ignition switch thats causeing these problems due to not being on? will it fix when i get teh switch put on and the car re-tuned? I don't wanna dump a TON of money into fixing it as on the 7th ill be putting in the VQ but I DO need it for work and I don't wanna tear up a perfectly good KA. Let me know...thanks

We like to say that it gives the cars "character." If it isn't rattling, leaking, smoking, releasing magic wiring smoke or clunking, it's probably not running. Chalk up your "problems" to having an automobile with character and personality.

To answer your question, tighten your alternator belt, and verify the color of the smoke. With its age, it could be rings and/or valve seals.

 

Thank you Vertigo. I will get on that. And the smoke has a bluish gray hue to it. And smells REALLY damn strongly of gas. It wasnt smoking until after the second roll-start and the belt didnt start whinning until i started to roll-start it as well...which leads me to wonder If I could have...by chance...thrown it out of time? or something? Thats just what it feels like...and now the power-steering issue....not helping.

 

any blue = oil burning. Not to say you're not running rich, but you're def burning oil. Check the usual suspects for richness, MAF and ECT (engine coolant temp sensor). You can check the ECT with a multimeter. If you don't know what that is, go ask one of your socially awkward nerd friends.
