Question Tire question...

Right now I have 18x7.5 rims with 225/45/18 Falken FK-452 tires. I was looking at a couple of web sites for 18x8.5 rims to step up to. They say I can mount 225's on a 18x8.5 rim but in the 225's I have, it says DO NOT MOUNT IN 8.5 RIM. So that being said, is that just a warning as it is dangerous to do that or what? Anybody else done this? Thanks

you can mount whatever width you want if it'll stretch (sidewall has alot to do with the stretch)

safety doesnt really become an issue until your "mad tyte" overdoing it...you'll be fine mounting yours on 8.5s

this is a 225/40 on a 18x10.5

you'll see the mad tyte jdm driftor kids putting pizza cutter 185s on their 7.5 and even their 8.5 rims. But they don't care about the tire, it will only last a weekend anyway...
The tire life will go down some. It will wear a little funny. I doesn't really cause a major safety concern. I, however, wouldn't suggest doing it for very long. Sort of a temp thing until you buy new tires that fit right. And besides, if you want a wider rim, then you probably want more tire on the ground for more traction. If the tire size doesn't go up, you've not really gained anything...

Stretching tires stiffens the sidewalls which gives you more feeling and better response from the tire. So you do gain something.

225 on an 8.5 squares up fine. i've worked with aftermarket wheel and tire fitments for 6 years and have never seen a label that says "do not mount on a 8.5 width". dude above is probably right, it probably reads "do not mount on 18.5 rim" as in diameter, not width.

I looked at the tire again, in the light this time, and is does say DO NOT MOUNT ON 18.5 RIM. I feel like a jackass! I just didn' think there was such a size, 18.5 rim
