Potential Motor Build
I'm looking into building my sr20 up in the near future and I have a few questions that I am hoping the combined knowledge on here can shed some light on. First I was thinking of building the head with some solid pivots and new cams (and valves, springs, retainers, etc...) I found a how to on NICO and the guy claims that it will rev to 9000+ rpms. I don't need to go that high with the rpms, but I was thinking if I do that then I would want to set the red line at about 8000 rpms. The only problem being that I have no idea what duration cams I would need to go with to get my turbo to spool up with out massive lag and avoid damaging it by going out of the efficency range. I am going to upgrade to the Tomei ARMS B8446 turbo (ARMS) if that is of any help to you guys. Secondly if I start taking the rpms that high should I just go ahead and build the bottom end while I'm at it, that would be the next week link that I would see aside from maybe the tranny. I'm just trying to research this stuff so I know if it is even feasible before I try and save the money.
It sounds like you want a setup similar to mine. I dont get exactly what you are asking though. I have solid lifters, springs, retainers, valves, and Crower 280/280 step 3 cams in the head. I have CP pistons, stock conditioned rods with arp hardware in the block. I run a GT35R turbo with a .63 a/r. I run 12 - 13 psi on pump gas, I reach full boost at about 4500 rpms, and shift at 8500 giving me a 4000 rpm power band and just over 400hp. I run 30+ psi on race gas, reach full boost at 5000 rpms, and shift at 9k giving me 4000 rpms of power band and over 550hp.
That guy on Nico did a good write up on solid lifter install. Just dont resize the shims in the lifters to adjust lash. Instead resize the shims on top of each spring retainer to adjust lash.
If you have specific questions just ask.

I'm just worried that if I do take the rpm's that high then I could damage the turbo if I have to wrong duration cams, but from what you are saying, then it shouldn't be much of a problem. Thanks.
