Default Quick question about spun rod bearing...

Just because a rod bearing is spun doesn't necessarily mean the motor won't turn over by hand. Correct? I'm pretty sure this is correct.

Thats correct but a spun rod bearing means new rod and crank.. or have the crank turned and new rod.

A spun bearing if gets hot enough it could melt and lock the motor up but usually when that happens you throw a rod.

What happend ? why do you suspect a spun bearing ?

^^^ Wrong.

My buddy (who I've known for years, so I believe him) gave me an s14 with 80k miles on it for free to get it out of his garage. My BUDDY said that the guy he bought it from said that it had a spun rod bearing. Well I came across a set of rods and a crank for $5 with ~60k miles, just taking up space in this guy's garage. Crank and rods are perfect (Yes I said 5 haha).

So I was just turning it over before I open it up to inspect the bearings. If need be I will replace them and slap in the other set of rods and crank I have. While I'm at it I'll do the piston rings and all new gaskets.

How's that for a cheap motor?

Anything else I should do while I have it torn apart? Keep in mind this is just plain jane stock rebuild going into my DD. I need longevity out of it, not HP.

Just do a basic re ring. New rings, main and rod bearings, head gasket, freeze plugs, rear main, front main, timing chain.

Check all the rods and crank jouranls make sure there good.

i would also check the valves maybe do seals just cuz your there.

Remember its alot easyer to replace a $10 seal now then later.

^^^ Touche on the valve seals. Never torn apart a head. I've removed countless ones but never gone deeper than that. Sure it can't be too difficult.

KA heads are simple. There are no rocker arms or any of the sort. The cam sits directly on top of the valve. So all you have to do is unbolt the cam in proper sequence and then remove shim buckets; underneath which is the valve/springs.

Easiest way to remove the valves and springs is to use a standard valve clamp with a 1'' od pipe with a window cut in it to get to the retainer. It should take 30 minutes or so to take take all the valves out. If you need any help lmk, I rebuilt my head awhile back and will be doing it again to a spare motor.

And I got my S14 for 500$
