Nissan's Doi says they still have to distil exactly what impairment means: "If you drink one beer, it's going to register, so we need to study what's the appropriate level for the system to activate."
It's going to reach a point where there's so much of this techno-crap in new cars that you won't be in full control of the car at any point in the driving experience. We already have cars that brake and steer themselves in collision-avoidance situations, beep and buzz at you if you wander from your lane or try to merge with a car in your blind spot, apply brakes to slow you down if you're driving beyond the computer's comfort zone, and parallel park themselves. The day I come out of a restaurant after having dinner and a drink and my car tells me I can't drive home is the day I trade it in and go buy a 69 Camaro to do a full resto-mod on and say "screw it" to new cars forever.
