Why did they have those issues? Did the hydraulic lifters play a part in it?

No, but I've heard of people logging the use of their race cars, so I'll take that to mean you didn't catch the idea of long term use.

Matt car: 10,000+ miles per year

Your cars: so without any real idea of how often you actually run any given race car... 1/4 mile at high rpm and a 1/4 mile back at low rpm for X number of runs that day, for X number of days between rebuild.
Maximum 1500 miles per year here for not even 50 runs a week.

thats a world of difference.

Mark.. that block is on its way this week to you guys ! Motor was oil starved and the pistons chewed in on the sleeves a little so I really hope 90mm will do it because I have a 90.5mm headgasket and you guys have the 90mm pistons.
