oil leaking out of turbo??
Vang took out my turbo/manifold/turbo outlet setup from my SR last night. And we noticed that there was sum oil drips on the upper outlet pipe of the turbo, and some on the inner edges of the i/c piping between the couplers. and i noticed a little puddle of oil sitting on the inlet pipe right in front of the turbo. My turbo had been leaking coolant cuz the lines were bad, they may having been leaking oil also for all I kno. What may have caused the oil to go into the i/c piping and the little puddle in front of the turbo, besides the possible oil line leak?? Did the coolant leak have anything to do with it?? thanks.

if you are running the stock setup with the valve cover lines, you could be getting enough oil vapor in the intake pipe from excessive blowby to cause there to be a thin layer of grimy oil on everything. over time, if u dont take the intake pipe off, it would puddle a bit.
most likely the turbo is old and the oil seals on it are getting worn and letting some get by and into the compressor housing. its common wear, most of the time the exhaust seals go first though. make sure you're not smoking at all, have someone follow you around for a bit as you get on it. eventually, you'll just need to replace the turbo.
keep an eye on it, you dont want the intercooler and piping to get oil in it, it will make its way to the intake and eventually if you're getting enough oil pushing past and into the combustion chambers, it can cause detonation. but if that happens youll definitely notice the oil leak is major.

thanks Dan, that makes a lotta sense. btw, a greddy catchcan would solve the problem right?? plus when i go to put the turbo back in, im putting in new stainless steel lines along with a new actuator, so I should be good right??

catch can will help, if u have blowby. and it will keep oil vapor out of the intake pipe. if your turbo is going bad in the seals, then it wont change anything. but slap it back on and make sure its cleaned well (check the whole hotpipe too and make sure it hasnt made its way to the intercooler yet (or youll have to flush that and the cold pipe too out and clean them). and just periodically check the oil level and the turbo, esp near the intake pipe and hotpipe connections. also watch for smoke. you'll be fine for now. a little oil leakin past wont hurt much, but if it gets worse, time for new turbo.
alright, definitely will do. ur awesome as always dan!! thanks man
also, quick question. can't i put a little air breather filter thingy on the intake side of the valve cover, and I just hook up the catchcan on the other side??
