I'm fairly new to the import car thing and all i really know about are jeeps and trucks :/ and hell yea they use alot of gas.....I was thinking about doing a 90-94 s13 because thats the one ive always liked and isnt the 89 a sohc? but should i go with a newer one for any reason?

yeah, thats basically it.
90 and older are SOHC and basically suck balls.
if you like flip up lights, the the s13 is the way to go.
if you're not such a flip up light fan then go s14.
the differences are basically just body stuff.
the s14 has more/different sensors but thats about it.
look for a straight frame, no rust, everything works, and a 5spd is always nice too.
good luck and have fun
let us know how it goes
