obscene amount of blow-by
we've managed to get every other one of our issues taken care of, excpet for the massive amount of blowby.
So much that it is causing the main seals to leak.
You can take the oil cap off and it will all but stall.
any ideas of the cause and how to fix it?
thanks

Your PCV valve is screwed. The way that the crankcase vent system works is that the oil vapors will get sucked through the PCV valve. The air that replaces it comes from the tube going between your intake tube and the valve cover. This keeps any of the air that enters the engine metered (that's drawn after the mafs). If you open the oil cap, air can enter there around the mafs and lean out the mixture. Find the PCV and oil separator underneath the intake manifold (bolted to the block) and fix it. Or, just cap off the PCV lines, run a filter on the valve cover, and cap off the hole in the intake pipe.

a little amount of blowby coming out of the valve cover is normal sometimes, as the PCV is only fully opening under certain conditions. it is not open at idle and WOT, IIRC. the upper valve cover hose, usually draws air in when the PCV is drawing air out, but it will also reverse its air flow sometimes.
i know that there more or less should be some blowby, but this is way too much.
I don't have a compression tester. Would the engine still pull hard if the compression was off? I always thought that you would notice a lack of power if the compression was bad and this engine pulls pretty hard. just as hard, if not harder than my buddies 240.

low compression=No power...so if you have power, do what dan and Epstien said...that should fix it. Its gotta be the PCV, i'd hook up a catchcan...then you can examine whats in the catchcan to see if you still have a problem/if you're losing too much oil, etc...

Go get a compression tester! They're ~$10 and I'll have more respect for you (a $99.99 value absolutely free).
I think Epstein's right (you can almost assume that everything he says is right). I've heard of a motor experiencing the same symptoms and the PCV happened to be completely clogged. New PCV, problems no more.
