Want to rebuild your SR head?
Ok so i can get factory prices on shims/guides/anything else that you want from nissan. I just bought the Nissan factory tools that is used to measure and adjust your valve shims/rocker guides. This measurement is extremely critical, and if you're planning on getting cams or doing any head work, you NEED to have these replaced, remeasure, and recalculated. Most places will charge you around $340. PM me if you think that is too much...because i do too!

they are 2.00 each. any more than that and you're getting ripped off.
also. you don't need to ever touch this if you've never had your head apart. no need to re shim.
also, the guides only come in 3.0mm height from nissan.

The lifters and rockers are the expensive parts. If you're getting nissan pricing on stuff, you should read what Andreas Miko says about late model SR head stuffs. There are revised rockers (not roller) with deeper bowls, and lifters with large side openings in the late (99-2000) fwd SRs. Find this stuff, and I think you could do well reselling it. Supposedly, the revised HLA stuff is good for 9k rpms. Oh and the B15 SR cam oiling rails are larger diameter to resist clogging.

Also, i would make sure you have a stronger oil pump if youre opening up any orifices that deal with oil flow and pressure.
the revised rockers have a bowl approx .025" deeper to prevent rocker float. so this comes into effect with your geometry of hydraulic lash adjusted cams. it can produce excessive valve guide wear.
the lifters with the large side openings simply have a .025" taller base height, as well as having a smaller hole on the top, and more surface area (less hole) on the top to distribute the weight.
the earlier lifters have small side openings and larger top openings.
oh it gets better. there's a third style of lifter with a large side opening and a large top opening, and a one piece center section that is check valved differnetly than the rest.
I have spoken to COMP cams in depth about all of my valvetrain stuff, and the responses i got were QUITE interesting.

SR20DET oiling rails are all larger than SR20DE oiling rails to start out, so if you have a rwd sr, you'll be fine with that.

If this is omitted, the camshaft won't contact the rocker arm squarely, which can cause vibration and/or valve train wear due to the extra "slop".
The shims come from the factory in 50 different sizes, so obviously they wanted this to be a precise measurement, and why it takes precise tools.

the shims come from the factory in 50 different sizes because they would rather there be a bunch of different heights available so the valve jobs can be half assed and cut way down into the seats. not that it has to be super precise.
as long as you are within .001" of cross height differential you are fine. according to nissan spec.
Also: you do NOT need to re shim the head when replacing valve springs. the only thing that will affect the installed height of the shims is if you have done a valve job. Changing the springs alone or retainers or even cams has nothing to do with it, so don't bother.
