Default timing issues

I finally got a timing light and was able to check the spark timing.
its weird because the light isn't hitting the marks right. its random sometimes it will hit it and other times it will be before the marks or after the marks. no real pattern to it. Because it was so random, my first thought was that the light wasn't working right, so I hooked it up to my buddies truck and it was perfect. the light hit right on the mark everytime.
Whats causing this issue?
Is it that the ecu is just fucked over and sending out random timing issues. Or or is it that the ICM isn't "listening" to the ECU and its just doing what it wants?
or am I out in left field somewhere?

yea if you're engine timing is right, it will idle...if its one tooth off...it will not idle. if its not flashing correctly make sure you're coil connections are good, and there's no corrosion.

the mechanicaly timing is correct. that was the first thing we checked, and then we re did it just to be sure.
Also already checked the connections for corrosion.
At the beging of this, we thought that we weren't getting any spark. So we went through the process of checking all of that, and we are getting plenty of spark, it just isn't at the right time. According to the light, it is sparking at random times. Every so often, it lines up right and the engine will try to run, and then just die when the spark timing jumps around again.

the teeth on the dizzy arent set right to the gear that turns it. put the crank at TDC, take the cap off the dizzy, and line up the contact with the top left wire plug in on the cap.then put it in. the contact that spins inside the dizzy should be looking at about 10:30.

i'll check it to be sure. I know its not off 180. I might belive one tooth.
I remember it looking like something around 10:30. For visual reference, on that scale, how far off would one tooth be?

if its off by one tooth, it will fire every 4 seconds or so but thats it. its a big diefference being off by one tooth.

regardless of how far it is off, logic is still telling me that it would spark at the same point every time, not some random time like it is doing.
