how to set the timing? '965 ka
well i got the KA back together and it fired up but it wouldnt idle. I found a pretty nice vacume leak on the intake where a piece of the old gasket was still on and not making a seal. that will be fixed today. I was wondering to what degree to set the timing at? because right now i just have it set at pretty much 0 or tdc. or does it not matter as long as it is close because the com puter takes care of it?
I think it is not idleing because of a combination of a few things. the old gas in it(has been sitting for a year) the timing is off, and the vacume leak.
any other ideas or suggestions to look at that could go wrong while it sat all that time?

if you installed the distributor correctly you should be able to adjust it until the car idles correctly. fix all vacuum leaks and i dont think that bad gas would cause it to die.

yes drain the tank cuz it is most likely tarnished.
Fix all the vaccum lines as stated. If you said the car is that close to being in time it should run and idle.If you think it is at tdc and has problems starting or holding a idle,as in the motor looks like it wants to jump out of the car will its trying to idle, it could be 180 out.

180 out it wont run it would backfire and sputter and not crank up. Make sure your on the right mark Ive ran across this issue. I had two manuals and online documentation say two different things about TDC 5deg before would be fine. But teh Second line from the bottom is TDC. Its more than likely a vacum leak still and the car has to relearn everything make sure you have the nock sensor plugged in and O2 and everything plugged up right. Mine did the same exact thing. I had a vacum leak in the TB and Teh knock sensor was unplugged as well as the IAC plug. Mine idles rough becaue of teh yr of the engine and having a chiped ECU and a vacum leak still but those are the issues id look at.
well it fired up and running. it was a damn vacume leak by the #3 injector. It wasnt seated all the way and it was sucking air in a little and that stoped it from idling. I found it by mistake too lol. i was leaning over the motor and put my hand on the fuel rail and when i leaned on it the car started to idle. yussss!! all i need now is a power steering pump and i am good to go
