that is a great price to have the rear main seal replaced. considering how hard of a job it is and how much time its gona take. However the rattling could be something more serious. the flywheel/clutch assembly needs to be examined to make sure everything is nice and tight. hopefully you're not a victim of crank walk or something gay like that. Drop the oil and make sure there is no metal shavings.

get under your car and check the shields aroud the exhaust...mine was making a rattling noise aroudn that same area all the tiem whether or not it was in gear and we got under it and checked and it was just a shield

You have to remove the tranny and clutch to replace the rear main. 3 hour job with a lift so a hundred bucks is a good deal. The noise you hear could be an aftermarket fly wheel and clutch if you bought the car modded or could be something loose have that someone that changes your seal take a look for you. But if you heard the same chattering noise before on another car that is normal chances are you might have a aftermarket flywheel/clutch.

thanks so much guys.. but if i have the aftermarket clutch it would grab nice and hard wouldnt it? and if its making that noise wouldnt kinda show that something is wrong with it.. its clattering like it might be that exhaust shield ill check that i think the one on top could be the problem.. thanks again guys

hopefully its just the exhaust shield. i had a nasty sound comin from my bellhousing area once, and it turned out i was stripping and loosing flywheel bolts. i was like fuck it, i've got another ka, so i drove it until the flywheel fell off, and destroyed my entire powertrain.

If you are interested in doing it yourself, I have a KA taken completely apart in my garage now. I could snap some pics and show you exactly what needs to be done. PM me if you're interested.
