Well, not to nitpick and be a jackass about it...

But, that is steel, straight weld, MIG (probably) - and exceedingly cheap for fab work. Plus you probably have jigs and maybe even precut parts.

For a shop that may not do a lot of aluminum work, it is a different gas mix, setup time, and having someone there who can TIG aluminum well. For a one-off, aluminum, TIG-welded, two pipe join, thats not a bad price. I know shops that charge 60+ for a BOV install.

^in most cases, true. Welder's dont have the funds, or don't have the need to be equipped with a $4,000 TIG machine.
My dad trained employees to TIG weld, and two of them actually started up their own companies. One is On-Time-Welding. Fred (owner) used to work for us awhile back. My dad trained him well, and is proud that he moved on and opened up his own shop in St.pete.
Railing price: $45 per linear foot for steel guardrails standing at 42" height with primer coating and it includes installation. All pickets are fully welded.
So think about it. For $45 we are including fabrication, material, delivery, and installation. Compare that to welding a flange.
$40 just to weld a flange is pretty high from my point of view.

jigs yep yep.
I'm just using it as an example.

You don't think my shop is set up for TIG welding or something???
Sorry for charging welding for soooooo little. My bad. I'll just remember to triple the price for any automotive work for anyone who steps in my shop.

Too bad for anyone in the future. I'm now aware of what other shops are charging. We do nothing but high quality work, at a price that most shops can't touch.
If you want to see some examples of our recent works of aluminum, stop by the First Dartmouth Properties at 724 2nd Avenue South, St. Petersburg , FL 33701. There's a 20 ft custom made aluminum pergola that we just finished up 2 months ago. Also check out Stone Creek Apt. on Fowler near USF. We are fabricating the post for the entry sign there.
If you want some stainless steel work, call up EuroBake in St.pete. Well over $30,000 of custom fabrication of 304 and 316 baking pans, tables, and parts for their new multi-million dollar baking system.

I'm not doubting your shop at all.. I'm saying that for random shop X that doesn't do a whole lot of TIG or aluminum work, that seems like a fair price. It is purely theory and I'm basing this off shops in an entirely different area of the country. I bet you'd have a hard time finding someone in your area who repairs combines on a regular basis.

What you charge is your business, and everyone appreciates helping your forum buddies out a little bit. "Hellified cheap" in this instance was a good thing. Most places around here wouldn't do it for that cheap, unless it was a personal friend. Someone asking about pricing on a forum boards has the right to hear a discussion about it, and reasoning. I'm glad you're cheaper, and a well set up certified shop - I just wanted to point out that $40 wasn't so far off the deep end that you seem to think.

I appreciate the biting sarcasm though.
