Default Noob question about s13 vs s14 sr20

I read on another message board that you loose the vvt of the sr14 motor when you throw cams in there. Is that true? And if so, it would make no sense to pick up an s14 sr20 motor if I had plans of ever putting a more aggressive cam, correct?

From what Casey at XAT told me yes you will lose the VVT of the s14 motor when adding aftermarket cams. I can't really comment on the second part except for that I know the vvt motor is a better motor with just basic bolt-ons(HP wise) but from what I understand about the SR's(which is very little) the s13 is the way to go when making big power due to the head design and better flow characteristics. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

if u buy cams designed to accept the vvt u can keep it, but those are top dollar i think tomei makes them.

You can keep it as long as you get the cams that are compatible. Most cams are not compatible with it and the great cams with high lift and long duration for making big power will require you to eliminate it. So no it wouldnt be worth it to go s14 if you are shooting for big power. An s14 motor is good if you just want basic bolt ons they make more than the s13 with mild mods. I have never been impressed with the s14 motors that try to make big power they never live up to expectations.
