sr20det problem, out of ideas
Ok so best way to describe the problem is that when its not in gear, the car revs nearly to redline and then pings (sounds like a hammer hitting metal almost) but under load, it does it about 4-5k. When i first start it up it idles likea dream, once i rev it and it pings, it has a rough or 'pulsing' idle..... lil up lil down lil up..... At idle, the car also has a clean exhaust but every now and then a puff of black smoke will escape.... when i rev it up i get white smoke.
furthermore, at last drift event my LAST run only, i was shooting flames, the rest of the day i did not, but everytime i spun/let off gas i got a flame. i dont know if thats helpful.
things ive tried:
-checked all intercooler piping/couplers
-checked air intake
-checked MAF (swapped with 'known good')
-replaced Coolant Temp Sensor
-replaced Plugs, and gapped them at ~0.22
things ive heard/read:
-could be bad tank of gas
im not sure if that is 'possible' to cause my situation, but since i did add 2-3gal of fuel from a different station in during the event (finally getting to that gas) and because i cannot find a air leak it seems it could be all thats wrong.
how can i test this? will filling tank with new fuel help, like almost spread out the bad gas so its not acting alone, or do i have to burn it off? or should i jst open tank and drain it?
please, any ideas or confirmations needed.... event on the 26th i'd like to be ready for.

welcome to the world of misfires. Seeing as how its so intermittent...I'm going to say its a wiring issue...either your injector harness is open and grounding to itsself, or something in the engine bay, or your ignition wires are shorting to something besides the spark plug. the pinging you hear is where your knock sensor should kick in and retard timing...if you're car came equipped with one. i know the newer SR's did. Could be bad gas...just not enough octane to burn quick enough at that pressure in the cylinder...very possible, get rid of that to start with then check for chaffing of wires like i said.

I would say the pinging is because your timing is off and you need to run a higher octane gas? I had this problem with mine and I put a higher octane in and it went away but I still shoot flames for some reason?

i have 93 in it. it ran fine at first event then had this problem after its been parked for 3 weeks. Now i did add fuel from another station middle of the event (about 2 gallons) and i possibly got a bad batch of gas? but the timing is dead on, and the gas is 93.... maybe ill fill it with fresh 93...

I think that Rubber Berner is correct as far as the pinging issue is concerned. The white smoke is another issue that may or may not be linked. Have you done a compression check? Checked out the headgasket? I had a headgasket go on my SR and it blew white smoke. Good Luck.
