which reminds me, have you ever heard of or seen anyone take out the upper timing chain's SIDE guide? the one "across" from the tensioner? apparently it's not needed either, as i have heard many people chime up about recently, but it doesn't seem like it's as much of a concern of being a faulty part as the upper guide is. and looking at the design of the upper timing chain front cover and the tension of the chain itself, it really doesn't look like it is needed. i'm still tossing around the idea of building a motor, it's something im wondering about when and if i decide to do so, whether to keep that part or not.

Just to let you know. KA's dont have rocker's. So you dont ever need rocker arm stoppers or anything like that.

the tensioner can get stuck with dirt/debree if you pump it up and down a few times all should be good (if it was stuck)

when i bought my car in '01, i think i had the valve cover off within the 1st 6months to check for the upper guide and replace the gasket anyways. my car had 60k miles on it, and the upper guide was gone, i even hear some of the late 97-98 model's didnt even come with the upper guides, though there are still holes in the head where it would be.
97-98 they didn't have them. The holes were still there because it would be expensive to make a new casting for <5000 cars.

Yes remove it before it swims in your oil pan or destroys your valvetrain.

nothing...if you read more carefully, you would see that you just need to remove the timing chain guide.
