speedometer working on and off in 240

Default speedometer working on and off in 240

well i'll be driving along and it will just kick in. then at random it will go back to 0. and then back again. wth. i cant get a speeding ticket. is it just a bad connection? if so where do i look?

i had this problem w/ my tachometer..i just replaced the gauge with another i found in the junkyard..
check the speed sensor on the tranny..maybe its a loose or dirty connection

smacking the dash right above the gauge cluster seemed to work on mine. or u can pull out the cluster and check for shorts. oh yeah speed sensor too.

The connection from the wiring harness into the cluster is "cheesy" at best. The connection has gone loose or oxidized over time. Pull it out and clean the contacts on the three connectors. Everything else on the cluster works because they run on 5V or 12V signals that are sent to them. The speedo is more sensitive because it sends AND receives directly to the speed sensor, and the signal is a lot smaller.

Other people have had to fix this problem, so we should hear from them as well. I know that Paul Kersey had a similar problem. Maybe he'll chime in.

thanks guys. sounds like its just old. where can i locate the speed sensor in the tranny? i'll try to check my chiltons book.

speed sensor is a film-can (remember when cameras took film??) looking job hanging from the passenger side of the tranny, right at the back. Two wires coming from it run to a connector right where the engine and transmission meet.
