Hey guys.... I need some help please. I have a 95 Maxima that repeatedly stalls out on me while driving and at stops. It also poors out black smoke when trying to restart. The engine light is on now, but it seems to come on and off when it wants to. I did replace my starter and it made a difference when I do start it, but this stalling thing is crazy. No one seems to know anything. It must be something common enough for a Nissan mechanic to figure out. PLEASE HELP !

what code did the ecu have?
knowing that is very important.
a starter wouldnt have anything to do with smoke.
sounds like a bad MAF, or no spark.

I havent had it checked. Where is the ECU and how do I check the codes ?

it should be obd2, if so you can use a scanner, autozone will scan it for free, but since the car isnt running that doesnt help.
im pretty sure the maximas have the same style ecu that you can turn the dial to flash codes. but if you dont know where the ecu is, or how to do that, youre kinda fucked.

best bet might be to tow it to someone that knows what they are doing instead of selling you a starter you didnt need.

it seems I am fucked... this is what I've done so far. I did go to Autozone, but I have a car that was made in 95 and that is the cutoff for the obd1 and obd2, so they couldnt check it for me. It's NOT out of service , YET. its still running. Just keeps stalling . Any other suggestions ? I have to get this fixed soon.

my 95 200sx was obd2.
did they look for the datalink, or just tell you they couldnt scan it?

he looked under my stearing wheel column, said he saw it, it had a different connector and was unable to test

hmm. if its under the column its most likely obd2, and that guy was just an idiot.

might want to take it to nissan, or somewhere with a conult tool, just be safe. and sure you wont get ripped off.
