If you have an drill corded/cordless and some time you could do it yourself, It would save you some money and gain you some expierence. A DA (dual action) sander would work better but not every one has one. Just get some polishing compound varying grits from a local auto body & paint supply shop and have at it. ask the clerk he could surely lead you in the right direction. I've polished rims and other misc things this way. Just take your time!

What I usually do is take the cover and chemically strip it, then use multiple grits of sandpaper to get the finish down to where it is absolutely smooth. Then, I use 3 different compounds (start out course, end up fine) on the polishing wheel and step to the hand polisher for the tough to get areas. After that, it is on to hand polishing. All in all, I would expect around 5-6 hours to get it to where I would be proud to put it on my car.
**EDIT** I usually knock off the casting flashes on the covers as well, it makes a nice difference. If you're in the area, you can stop by the shop and take a look at some of the s14 KA valve covers I've painted up to get an idea of the quality level of my work. We're on off of 66th street and 123rd in Largo.
