Sounds like you're on the right track with the dash board whacking. To get the cluster out, you're going to have to remove the knee panel, lower the steering column (only 4 bolts), and pop out the cluster trim. Since you know that the problem is in the dash, it's probably a loose connection on the cluster itself. Use rubbing alcohol to clean up the contact on the cluster.

Tell us how it comes out. A lot of people are having cluster problems all of the sudden.

Sounds like bad connection...get some contact cleaner, and some steel wool or fine sandpaper and clean all the connections.

what he said up there. Taking your guages out isnt hard at all. 5 min job with minimum tools (12 or 14mm socket for the steering column, and a screw driver pretty much for the rest) have fun not braking the trim tho ;]

yea, if you don't wanna crack your dash, you better drop the steering column because otherwise its a bitch to get out without cracking it and scratching it all up.
