Default Is this normal?

I was messing around with my air box after changing the filter and decided hey let's try some things so I unplugged my MAF from the intake system and proceeded to start my car. (90 KA24E 240) To my suprise it started and ran fine. It idled quite a bit lower than with it plugged up too. The only big problem I noticed was the slight amount of black smoke that started coming from the exhaust. Is it normal for the car to run with the MAF unplugged? If not why would mine run with it unplugged? Also I'm assuming the black smoke was from it running rich??? Thanks in advance for your help guys.
