Default cluster lights went out.

so last night i turned my lights on and i saw my cluster lights were still dark. so i tried turning the dimmer up, but that didnt work either. they were blank. so i checked all the fuses in the cabin and the engine bay, and nothing popped. so, any ideas? this was on my 91 240.

Have you checked the bulbs themselves?

Could be a short. Mess with any wires (Anywhere in the car) before this?

I've had a few different problems like this before...

Try punching the dash a few times - sounds crazy but my old nissan used to do it and my new pulsar does it. If you have a short or loose connection the lights should come on and off. If not then try taking out the gauge cluster (it's easy) and test the bulbs, if they work then try the connector pins. You can figure out which one goes to the lights by following the copper outlines by the bulbs over to the connector area, and then just count up the lines and match it to the pins. Good luck.

if it was a short it probably would have caused a fuse to pop, but seeing as how they're all fine, i'd say loose connection/high resistance in that circuit somewhere. Do you want the wiring schematic?

well if you had to punch the dash to get them to work, that would also most likely mean the relay/solenoid for that circuit was on its way out. either way, it gets weirder. last night i went to dinner, and when i turned my lights on the dash lit up fine. even my low wiper fluid light went out! maybe i was met by the car fairy? beast the hell out of me. next time it does this though, ill hit the dash and pull that cluster. thanks for the replies

I think that your gauge cluster isn't in tight or the connectors aren't touching the pins very well - either way I myself would pull it apart just to see... Good luck, and atleast our nissan's aren't as bad electrical problems as chevy's. hahaha
