Default How to break in a built engine???

I've never seen a post on this so I am quite curious on how to go about breaking in my engine when I get back from the machine shop. Im going to be turbocharging the engine but should I run it N/A like stock until it get broken in and then switch over to my turbo? I'm going to ROM tune it but obviously one can't take a fresh motor to the dyno and pound on it for a few hours. I dont want to run turbo'd till I get it perfectly tuned either. so does one do?

why dont you just have him burn you a base map so it'll run and after it's broken in, then go all out for the full tune. I think the turbo would be ok if it was on but limit the amount of boost you can push and dont go WOT. Try to keep it under 3500rpm which i know is hard, but i know it's possible.

IMO but who am i to say?

Here's a process for ya: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

It's much contested, any locals have praise/hate on this?

Jesse

PS - Any word when our engines will be done?

Wow, interesting article Jesse, quite contradictory to what John's method is as well. Thanks for the write up too John. And I WILL NOT be tuned since compression, cams, etc. will all be different. Im just gonnna run the old tune settings on my s-afc until its time to get the 'ol ROM tune. It won't be perfect but it should be pretty close, no?

Jesse, I havn't heard anything from them. THey said they would call me as soon as they tore into it to let me know what oversized pistons I could order and to let me know if everything looks good, ie, no cracks in block, head, etc.

yeah, but where you idle the car for 20 minutes at 2000rpms it seems like they don't like that. They didn't like it when yamaha said to run an engine for 15 minutes. They say that because the most important time for breaking in you engine is within the first 20 miles. Saying one needs to create load on the engine to seat the rings properly within those first 20 miles before the hatching on the cylinder walls wear away. At least thats what I got out of it. It looks identicle to what you say minus the 20 minute idle period at 2000 rpms. I

but yeah, im gonna put the s-afc back to when it was dyno tuned and break-in like John suggested. After thinking about it, there is no way that 20 minutes at 2000rpms is going to wear the hatching down on the cylinder walls. So, thanks John and Jesse for the replies.

to add to johns method, minmum of 1200 miles of under 4000rpm driving and no more than 50% throttle
