Default $900 for tranny repair!?

Well, took the car to a professional tranny shop today and the dude said it sounds like a input shaft bearing. He said a bearing kit will cost be $360 and overnighted will be $405 which he said will leave right at $400. Then, he said that if he has to take it off the car himself and put it back he will charge $300 bucks. Also, for being on the bench alone on labor he will charge $250. All this time im like...... About $950...yeesh. That is insane. I would take this thing off myself but then itll be about $650. At least homeboy said he would give me a free estimate....that is taking it apart and see what's wrong with it then put it back together free of charge. What do you guys think? Seems a bit much to me.

i think you have the more problems with your car than any other person on the planet.
and that really sucks.

but transmission repairs are costly.
thats why most people just replace the whole thing.

thing is that if i buy another transmission it will be another used transmission. Im just afraid that if i go and buy a used transmission i will have the same problems again and still have to buy a rebuild kit for it. A new transmission from nissan is about $3000 - $4000 and a new one from mossy is about like...$1700 i think. Im struggling to afford the repair for this damn thing.

Honestly if you buy a used transmission or a new transmission, as soon as you start to lay into the power you're going to destroy it.

If you want it to hold the power you need to do something like a PAR gearset, or never drive the car as hard as the horsepower it makes allows you to.

tim am i right in assuming the frailty of the se-r trans?

Well, the b15/p11 tranny have been known for holding some big power. I know it will hold but it needs to be in good shape first u know?

+1 on tranny rebuilds being very expensive. Hell my cousin paid 1200 for a rebuild on his civic ex tranny rebuild.

they actually arent that bad.
just dont speed shift, or be really hard on them and they can hold 350 ho with no problems. good ideas for you would be shot peening, and welding the case, and the brace from andreas miko.
the gearset is expensive, but really good.
but the only steps are shot peen, weld, and brace. anything over that, youre into thousands of dollars.
