Because they're FUN.
Just don't drive around in the rain with it.
Reasons why one should NOT weld an open diff:
Cornering SUCKS, you will screech around and the rear end may or may not being to slide and/or hop around. Especially tight turns.
Tire wear will be significant.
It's fucking scary in the rain to lose control at any speed.

If this is a DD I don't recommend it. Or at the very least. Be careful.
Reasons why you SHOULD weld your diff.
Traction.
Drifting is fun.
Traction.
Breaking things are fun.
Traction.
Etc.....
I had my friend weld my diff. He just charged me for the materials, which was 75 bucks in welding rods.
His welded diff went 11.90@127mph So I trust this man's work with my life.
I do not know if he would be interested in doing yours... however if you would like, I would ask him. It will take a day or so, and you would have to bring him the diff. Drain the fluids yourself, etc. I would expect to pay at the least, 100 bucks for this, but have no idea how much he would charge you.
