Out of curiosity how plentiful and cheap are relatively new, low mileage motors?
really cheap, my friend sold his for 250ish. Put a metal headgasket on it, it will hold up better. SOHCs are just damn old. To prevent a more current happening try and find someone who is taking it out of a newer model 240(97-9 nothing their go 95-96...just my .02

OH I beg to differ. DOHC KA's do not have any sort of head gasket issues if they are taken care of and are not boosted. I've had a few of them, and so have my friends. The only time a dual cam KA will have a head gasket issue is if it gets too hot.

The SOHC on the other hand has a front cover manufacturing flaw taht makes the engine mix oil and coolant when a stud breaks off as the motors get older.

You can run a dual cam KA for about 250k miles without having any problems if it's properly taken care of.

An SR would not be planned for the immediate future. I really don't want a project car as my daily driver. So if I end up with a 240 she will remain pretty much stock for quite a while. Upgrades will only be made when stock parts need replacing. Depending on the cost and time associated with a DOHC swap, I may do that just so I can have something a bit more sporting to drive.

The G20 already has a new sr in it along with a bunch of other aftermarket stuff. All new suspension, new clutch, exhaust, etc. Its fun little car to drive. You should call Randy up and at least go check it out. BTW, did you talk to Dave W. yet?

Sohc engines are old, brittle, testy engines...if you keep it cool, and don't overrevv it, it will be kind to you. If you put a metal headgasket in a SOHC (you gotta look hard for one...they're out there though) it will last a while. DOHC engines are just better, newer engines...more power, more tq, more tuning capabilities, a much better aftermarket, and very reliable from what i've heard. They still make Dual Cam KA's (14 years with minor changes in the ignition system and other things) in the 4cyl frontiers....so technically you COULD swap in a dohc with 5k miles on it if you wanted a truely reliable engine... It all comes down to money.

I'm going to check out that car this week. It is a toss up whether I want something RWD, or another FWD car.

Haven't talked to Dave yet. I just got back in from Atlanta, so I'll probably give him a ring next weekend.

If you dont find a suitable SOHC car Alan, look around for a cheap and clean DOHC car. that will eliminate the swap situation, and should most likely be accompanied with lower chassis mileage and newer condition. if u look hard you can find them.

+1 to never hearing about dohc head gasket issues, unless boosted, or severely beaten and overheated (i.e. not properly maintained most of the time).

if you want to know the real potential of a SOHC engine, just do a search for Rebello built SOHC NA motors. for naturally aspirated they are only putting out 285hp and road raced very hard in s14 chasied cars.
