Honestly, all of this I think has the makings of a great article in Down Shift. This is a subject area that many of us who are part of the import enthusiast community are interested.

if the kit car deal would work, people would just register every jdm car as a kit, and leave it alone though, so that probably wouldnt work.

If you ever want to do a story....I'm down, but warning, very dry information, although in the right hands, would make a kick-ass article. There are very few people that have actually researched the laws, and I am one of them, but Shawn Morris of RB Motoring is probably the MOST knowledgable.

you might have missed the point. you cant register a complete factory car as a kit car. as the law is written under Florida statutes it wont work. it can only be a certain percentage in parts from one manufacturer. read up on kit car laws if you like.

Example:
Motor- LS1
Frame- Homebuilt
Body- R33
Electronics- Haltech
What % nissan is that?
I know this plan won't work, but I'm kind of a "info whore" so I like to know thease things.

Let me see if I can explain this AGIAN.
It is illegal to IMPORT a "main" automotive component or automobile that does not certify to US standards UNLESS they are imported in "OFF-ROAD USE ONLY" status.
MAin Automotive components include: Airbags, Engines, Trannies, Chassis, etc.
If you can not legally import the parts for road use....than you can NOT use them for Kit Car Status.
Don't put the buggy in front of the horse here.
1st: Figure out how you are legally going to get the car/parts into the united states.....
2nd: worry about regisration by the individual states.
You'll never get past the 1st step.
