Default Ignition Gayness

my car does this stupidness on occasion: when i turn the key to off, the car keeps running, and wont allow me to press in the key release and get my keys back. and no, i dont have a turbo timer. does anyone know why it does this? i keep getting late to appointments because it just sits there and runs and i beat on anything i can find to get it to stop, it normally stops itself after 2-10 minutes. if anyonce can shed some light on this stupidness i would be much appreciative.

kinda cheater fix, wire in a fuel pump kill switch. or just get a really good friend that will let you swap parts around till you find the problem.

thats what i normally end up doing, but it still wont release the key and the ignition is still on because the electric fan is still going and the radio is still on, even if the key is set to off. i think i have a wiring problem in the steering column because if i kick it hard enough it will kill it and let me retreive my key.

Pull out the ignition switch and check the contacts on the back of it, the 12v wire might be shorting to the off wire...causing it to stay on until either the wire gets too hot, or it loses contact. if its not that...time to rewire the whole ignition circuit.
