Default s15 helical diff?

so uh... i had no idea these even existed... what would be the pros and cons of a helical diff over the viscous units that most of you know and love? and i'm assuming it would fit in the stock case but with some kind of different side shafts or some such shenanigans, but what the hell do i know? what problems could be encountered trying to drop one in? and what kind of $$$ am i looking at here?

EDIT: funny what happens when you search FA for anything related to nissans... you usually find your answer... how hard would it be to swap the guts from the s15 diff into an s14 pumpkin?

Pro: Near-instant lockup. Torque biasing. No clutches to buy and swap later. Quiet.
Con: Expen$ive. If you tripod, it acts like an open diff. Apparently break over 300hp.

so after further searching it seems like if i want to run it i'd have to swap the ring gear somehow (something about 1mm difference in bolt size or some such bs) and get a custom driveshaft...

OR swap out the guts into an s14 pumpkin (how i haven't the slightest idea)

thoughts?

well since it's not going to be a road race car or a drifter, i'd say none of that really concerns me... mostly looking for something that will retain quiet oem type operation (no crazy popping and clunking around turns, when speeding up, when slowing down, etc etc) but also not break down or give inconsistent operation (as i hear the vlsd's are prone to doing)

A friend of mine has a S15 diff and he seems to like it alot. It does lock up pretty easily compared to my J30, but I havent really put any stress on it either since I installed it. You will need I believe a different driveshaft to fit the S15, or you can have yours shortened or lengthened(not sure which way it goes).

Miles, for a stock car, i would get a vlsd over a hlsd. I don't like torsen / quaife style diffs at all for 240sx's. that's my personal preference, however. a vlsd will be a better match for your car.

i completely agree with matt. and the pumpkin bolts right just like an S14, the driveshaft if just funky.

Just save the $$$ for a real clutch diff bill, if u get either rear wheel even slightly airborne then it goes open diff style... plus they tend to break a lot..

Back when I used to race a 240Z with a VG30ET in it at sebring, we would break the quafie every 10 hours tracktime.. we then went to a nismo and didnt like its lock up qualities, but the KAZZ seemed to fix all our problems for relibility and handling
