Default Install cams on 97' 240

I have all the basic bolt-ons(intake, header, testpipe, cat-back exhaust, pullys, 55-shot nitrous system) on my KA. I need more power, so a set PDR cams should do the trick. The shops want $300 for install, can I do this my self?

more power..you should be able to up the shot on that thing to about 100 is the timing is set..you might want to look into some kind of fuel management..and if you dont have one a GOOD MECHANICAL LSD...

I saw this on TV the other day and took notes: hope this helps

Remove the valve cover
First ensure the motor is at TDC on the compression stroke for cyl #1
Next you want to mark the cams with a marker or paint
remove a single cam, follow the FSM (Factory service manual) for the order to loosen/tighten the bolts in.
They recommend taking out the intake cam first and when you are ready to reassemble install the intake cam last.

I also took note that the cams may move a couple of degrees when you remove the cam gears, so just turn the cams with a wrench to line up the gears again.

As for mechanic prices, that is a bit high just to install cams. If you call around $150 is about average price, I remember in california a mechanic who did $50 a cam. The job takes about 3 to maybe 4 hours..so even if he is charing $55 an hour X 3.5 hours your looking at 192.50. So 200 is the most I'd pay for the install, good luck, keep the forum posted on the install.

when you are getting ready to put the cams back in make sure you clean the piss out of the cam bolt and camshaft threads. then after all the threads are clean of dirt, sand, and oil (i mean take your time on this, it cost me a motor) then put blue loctite on the cam gear bolt. bolt down the cam and torque the cam gear bolt to 140 ft-lbs. making sure your gears and chain are dead on cause if not youll have to do it all over again.

the loctite takes 20 min to set and 24 hours to cure.

the cam shaft retainer bolts get torqued down to 8 ft-lbs, but make sure all the retainers are basically touching the head before you start torqueing them.

i found the hard way that its better to be safe than sorry.

WHAT BUCK SAID! it NEARLY ruined my $1200+ head because i forgot to clean the cam bolt and camshaft threads carefully! Luckily, i just need to replace a rocker and a new keyway and cam gear.

So back to the original question, can you install this yourself. Yeah you can but do you trust yourself ?
For 150 bucks, that would be a decent deal to let a mechanic go through all the hassle
