Default Long day! Headers and Short Shifter Finally installed...

First I gotta thank MaxType 240 (Jesse) and Jeff240sx (Jeff,) because with out their help this couldn't get done. 4 hours laters my hot shot headers and b&m shifter are finally installed, the joy! However, I'm getting this pulsing noise from my headers and we both believe is because we didn't tighten the bolts enough because of the welds weren't fine enough to tighten completely.

Could it be something else giving that pulsing sound? If this is the culprit can anyone recommend a mechanic to simply grind down the welds and tighten a couple bolts. Something that would only take him 30 minutes or so to do? If not, i'm going to hit the yellow pages.

the noise could be an exhaust leak, thats pretty much the only thing...i had problem putting a bolt on my turbo elbow, so i shaved a couple threads off the bolt, and it slipped right in...you can always try that out....

Yea , sorry I didnt' specify, but that's what Jeff believes is the problem is that exhaust leak. Now u said u shaved off the bolt? Is there anything I can do to shave off some of the welding on the header with out going to a mechanic? buy different bolts?

3 options, best to worst.
1) Grind down welds. Use stock nuts.
2) Buy smaller nuts and same size washers. Snip crescent out of washer to seal around the weld bead.
3) Buy smaller nuts and no washers.

Also on your to-do list. Check for anywhere that there are signs of carbon buildup. This will be your exhaust leak. Check the EGR nut, check O2 sensors. Check the 2 flanges. Find out if there is a mystery hole that I didn't see somewhere between the pipes.

Hmm I was told by a couple people I should use Blue Loctite, they swear by this stuff. Could this actually fill up any gaps between bolts? Never heard of this stuff?

I should've given you guys my copper gasket goop. It'll only hold up to 700 degrees though. I recommended and had the blue loctite there. TIghten the nuts after 100 miles.

Jesse

PS - You'll hear the exhaust pulses regardless b/c the thin walls of the header don't compare to your OEM iron (thick-a$$) manifold.

PSS - Test for leaks. Use a bottle of soap and water, spray it onto the manifold, rev it, any bubbles equals leaks.

Thanks jesse! I called up hotshot on the problem to here what they would say. First about the EGR valve, very common problem and they get tons of calls on it..if it's 3-4 threads exposed it's ok as long as it's tight. They purposely made it short so it would be "easier" to install. As for the welding, he said to get half washers and get new bolts. If that doesn't work to give him a call but he said that should do the trick

Jerry's was just fine.........He had the HOTSHOT installed this past weekend as well.

We broke off one of the studs but its not leaking. We're keeping our fingers crossed. I am sure he will chime in
