there are hash marks on each side of the head you line the cam pulleys up with those. that will make the cam pulley marks pointing out to each side. put your crank at tdc and throw the belt on.

Got the belt today, matched the old belt xactly, but the timing marks on the belt didnt match up to the gears. Instead, I set all at tdc, and counted the # of notches on the belt according to the service manual for ca18det. (crank to exh cam, exh cam to int cam) rotated about 5-8 times, no problems. did I miss anything??

Timing is 15 degrees BTDC.

As long as all the marks are lined up, you should be good to go.

To time the bottom, the little key on the crank end should be pointing UP. Now look on the lower right and you will see a little dot on the sproket on the crank. It should be lined up to another little dot on the block down there.

On the cams, find the little dots and the marks to time it are on the cover behind them. One at 10 o'clock (intake) and exhaust at 2 o'clock.

there was a conflict with that, mugen. do I line up the timing marks, and forget the fsm? or do i count the notches and get the timing marks in their "correct" notches on the belt? (with crank at tdc) both wont happen for some reason. I already rotated a few times, no contact - should that be all?

I never lined up the marks on my belt with the dots on the cam gears and crank.

Line up the dots on the cam gears and crank to their respective marks on the back cover.

Becareful though, if the motor is a TDC and you rotate the cams one full revolution, you will bend a valve. It IS an interferance motor. 6 valves told me so. But they broke when the timing belt broke

Didnt you live near me? I can come over some time and double check everything.
