the vg is a much more well balanced motor, the V6 setup is preferred over the staight 6 setup, even jgtc skylines use the vg. it sits back further and offers better weight distribution, you can tune a vg, if u have the money, to gain right power along with the vg. my suggestion is put a jet motor in it.
There is no reason to swap out the VG30DETT, if built properly it will make more than enough power for almost all drivers. To swap an RB into the Z32 will require hood madifications that will make it looks like a dsmn dsm, and thats just the tip of the ice berg for the problems.
If he is just looking to be different, take an NA Z32 and drop a SR into it.

However, I do think its a bad idea to put an RB in a 300zx as it doesnt fit well, sits farther forward, and stick way up. Not to mention that a VG or SR both make plenty of HP for a RWD car.
I guess it all depends on how much power he is looking for, if it a TT model then with stock internals and stock turbos he could get up to around 400 +- at the crank, change the turbo's to bigger turbos and with stock internals you go to around 550 +- and change out internals and 800+- is possible.
