Default destroyed an EGR valve

i'm currently driving a 95 dodge dakota.
2 weeks ago the plastic part of the EGR valve desinigrated (sp?) i put a new one on and all was well.
today driving, i hear a hissing sound that gets louder with more load on the engine. i bypass the EGR valve and the hissing continues.
the car has NO POWER. it sounds like a vac leak, but i cannot find it.

i'm guessing that whatever the leak is, is causing the exh temps to get REALLY hot and destroy the EGR valve. i also used a LOT (WAAY more than usual) of gas on today's trip, which goes along with the theory of the timing retard, super hot exh temps, melting the plastic of the egr valve.

the hiss is only when there is a load present.
i can hear it coming from the engine bay while in the car, but not when my head is over the motor.....

my daughter just went down for a nap so i can't sit in the driveway and rev the motor right now, so i decided to post to see about possible solutions like where to look, etc.
thanks folks

ps... this isnt my car so i can't just bypass the EGR permanently.
