guys i need some helpful info. I have had my acord for 2 years and some bonehead woman bashed into me. so now my car is totalled and I have 6 thousand dollars to buy something. i want turbo and awd is verrrrry nice BUT 6k dollars is ALL IVE GOT. I cant worry about failing trannies or ecus or whatever. I really want a fast car but i have to make a 80 mile commute to school and work every day and I need something reliable. Please be objective and tell me if the talon is reliable enough to get me where i want to go. . . .

Ill start by saying that I love my Talon and would not give it up for any other near its class. It is Fast handles well looks good and can be upgraded in any department to a level that is acceptable to you. It has a the luxuries youd expect all in a quick and nimble sports car package. 13 second 1/4 mile performance can be had for minimal investment (under $1000) and basic suspension mads make it a car worthy of competition in autoX events. It does just about everything very well.
Now the cons.. I have HEARD of people having multiple problems with their DSMs but I will focus on the 1st gens since thats what you are interested in. #1 problem all AWD DSMs have is a leaky transfer case. Good news is there is a recall on it and it should be repaired under that recall forever as long as the dealer doesnt think any mods you might have done caused the problem. Next problem is that there are some electrical gremlins with these cars as mileage increases. You can start to have problems with sensors and ignition components as well as the leaky capacitor ECU problem. The ECU is an EASY fix as long as you dont let it get out of hand. I replaced my caps as soon as I got my car and have never had a problem. I have also never had a problem with my electrical system besides a loose battery terminal.

All in all I think it is a great car. I couldnt be more happy with it. If you want power everything horse power traction and handling... its hard to beat.

get a 92-94 if you can and make sure it is AWD. 90-91 have weaker rear ends and bad electrical problems(maybe 90 only). 95+ have its own problem that you dont want anything to do with.

Well...to be more specific look for a May 92 or newer build. I personally have grown to love the looks of the pop-ups but the 92.5+ models have stronger rear-ends and xfer cases. The 90 model has many eccentricities that you dont even want to find out about (electrical problems TB difference shifter) and only one you would (external air-cooled oil cooler). The 93+ AWDs have better brakes also but all of this is easy to swap out (save for the 90 wiring harness and the fact the xfer case tranny rear-end of the 90-92.5 adds an extra expense).

Personally Id say 93-94 AWDs only...

Then again Buschur is running 10.5s in a 91 without problems but its been lightened just a bit (around 400 lbs.).

True...but Ive been wondering how those stock drivetrain parts are able to hold up...unless theres something hes not mentioning about that car. Granted it weighs 2780 but how is the xfer case and rear-end holding up to those HP figures?

You are absoloutley right John. I never thought of that. That thing has a weak xfer case and 3 bolt axles! He must have swapped them. He had to. If not Im removing my 4 bolts and going with 3 bolts...

There is the possibility that the weight reduction is allowing him to run the stock drivetrain...but I have a hard time accepting that a 400 lbs. weight reduction would allow him to get an extra 1-1.5 seconds from those weak-ass parts.

It does provide a glimmer of hope for me...Ive been putting my Talon on a diet the past couple days. I pulled all the interior trim from the hatch and scraped all the sound deadening also (no carpet spare or jack either). Pulled the rear seats and panels. I also pulled all the carpet padding and floor sound deadening material from the passenger side and the driver side is soon to follow. My car rides noticeably higher now (a friend even commented about it at the Sat. street races).

Hopefully by dropping a few pounds I can get the stock drivetrain to last a bit longer. Maybe I can manage a 12 on pump gas too...that would be very nice.
