Evo Tranny's
So i am just trying to figure out something for future reference. I might be getting an STI or an EVO 9. still dont know and not for a while but either way.
now my question is...the evo tranny. is it strong or what? i know the sti 6spd is practically bulletproof. I have heard that the EVOs tranny is good in the 5spd but weak in the 6spd. is that true? i was gonna go for an MR but if thats the case ill save my money and get a 5spd. what is weak about the 6pd and what is strong about teh 5spd. any info would help. thanks.

Cant speak on the sti but the 5 speed evo tranny is awesome.
It is the main reason why my next street drivin Mitsu will be a 5sp EVO IX.
My next track Mitsu will have a automatic. DSM trannies make me mad.

54k miles and climbing daily on my Evo 8 trans. Its notchy when cold, and 5th grinds when it feels like it (rare), but when the hammer is down its never locked me out of a gear at high rpm's. Its not bullet proof, but its far stronger than the 6spd.
I agree with everyone....the 5 speed is much better that the 6. Plus the 5 speed can withstand a few dumps of the clutch. On the other hand, the 6 speed kills the gears if you do that. But also keep in mind that the evo trany is made for you to slip the clutch, giving you a bad ass 60'. You do not want to dump it like you would in a wrx of sti, it will just bog the car down. The only bad thing about the 5 speed is that the factory clutch is worthless. Some of the last for a while(Mine till 18000 & and about 80 launches), and others for about 500 miles. The clutch is the weekest link in the evo. Once you upgrade it you are good to go.
My car has 28,000 on it in just 15 months of me owning it. It also has over 150 launches at the track. To this day I can no-lift with out getting locked out and no grinding.

This conversation is actually going on in evom right now :
Sti transmission vs evo transmission - evolutionm.net
As for me i can't really say either way as I've yet to do damage to my trans, so I'm all stock and its all working perfect right now.

Subaru's 5-speed is weak, and I haven't heard anything really about the 6-speed's strength. EVO 5-speed boxes have been in the 8's as said. Even is the Subaru 6-speed is strong, it makes no sense, way too closely-spaced gears, big 2.5 turbo 4 needs some longer gears to let it stretch it's legs.
